Jill Freedman
Jill Freedman (1939 - 2019) was an acclaimed New York City documentary photographer. Her photographs are held in the permanent collections of major art institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the ICP, New York, the New York Public Library, the Jewish Museum, New York, the George Eastman House, Rochester, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Freedman is best known for her street and documentary photography, recalling the work of André Kertész, W. Eugene Smith, Dorothea Lange, and Cartier-Bresson. She has published seven books: Old News: Resurrection City; Circus Days; Firehouse; Street Cops; A Time That Was: Irish Moments; Jill’s Dogs and Ireland Ever.
