"A master of cinematography with two Academy Awards on his roster, as well as 15 nominations. He has given light and color to dozens of Hollywood masterpieces, becoming an indispensable collaborator for such directors as the Coen brothers, Sam Mendes, Denis Villeneuve. Now let’s explore his art photography: from November 17th, 2022, to January 15th, 2023, in the Sottopasso di Piazza Re Enzo (free admission), Bologna dedicates the first institutional exhibition in Europe to Roger Deakins, promoted by Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Fondazione MAST and the publishing house Damiani.
Roger Deakins will be in town to inaugurate the exhibition Byways. Le fotografie di Roger Deakins and to introduce the first screenings of the films he worked for (the retrospective will run through January, at Cineteca di Bologna and MAST Auditorium). The exhibition originates from Deakins’ first and eponymous monograph published by Damiani in 2021 and will feature more than 50 black-and-white photographs from in the book, as well as a series of previously unpublished shots. The photographs were shot by Deakins at different times and in different places: the rural areas of North Devon tell us about a now vanished England of cattle fairs, unspoiled nature, and traditions; a large section is devoted to the sea, Deakins’ great love, a protagonist among the various landscapes photographed around the world. His images testify to a deeply ironic English sensibility and a keen and curious look at life on the back roads, as the title Byways suggests.
